Medical Coding & Billing

The Medical Coding Professional program is designed to prepare the student for entry level employment as a medical office administrator. Medical coding is the first part of the insurance billing process and involves using classification systems to assign code numbers and letters to each symptom, diagnosis, disease, procedure, and operation that appears in the patient's medical records which are used for insurance reimbursement, research, health planning analysis and making clinical decisions. Students will gain an understanding of the importance of patient privacy and the security of electronic protected health information through HIPAA and health information management topics integrated throughout the program.

Certification Eligibility:

The Medical Coding Professional program will prepare candidates with the core knowledge and skills necessary to prepare for the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) certification exam Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Career Opportunities:

Entry level positions for medical office administrator, medical coding, medical billing, medical records abstractor, medical office, insurance verification/claims and medical collections.

Program Prerequisites:

High school diploma or GED
